The OSU Experience
At Young Entrepreneurs Business Week 2016, July 24 to 30, more than 150 high school students visited Oregon State University to learn about business and leadership for one week. At YEBW, students build and run their own mock companies, while they stay and study on campus.
In YEBW’s 10th year at Oregon State University, a total of 156 students enrolled; including 116 in the first-year program Business Week and 40 in the second-year program Investing Week. YEBW staff and 33 volunteers—16 Advisors and 17 Interns—led the programs.
Students got the full campus experience at OSU, as they participated in activities at Weatherford Hall, Austin Hall, Memorial Union and the Beth Ray Center.
Throughout the week, students heard inspiring talks on business, leadership and career development. Speakers Frank Foti of Vigor Industrial, Angela Snow of NIKE, Ken Austin of A-dec, Greg Sherwood of Quest Investment Management, Lou Radja of Lou Radja Enterprises, Kathy Prosser of Woodruff-Sawyer & Co., Don Bishop of University of Notre Dame and Sandy Neubaum from Oregon State University presented for YEBW students at OSU.
At Business Week, 10 teams or ‘mock companies’ competed in the Business Simulation (BizSim) and Product Business Plan competitions. Company 10 emerged as the top performing team of the week. YEBW also honored Luis Acosta, from Nyssa High School, with the Nick Fisher Award, and Audrey Schelb, from La Salle Prep, with the Maurissa Fisher Award.
Several students earned accolades for their performance at Investing Week. Christina Spires, from Catlin Gable, was recognized for her performance in the Portfolio Competition.
Oregon State University supporters are at the core of YEBW’s success. More than 30 volunteers from Linn-Benton community made this program possible. Roughly 10 OSU Alumni served as Judges or Speakers—including Angela Snow, Greg Sherwood and Ken Austin.
