Will my child be supervised?
Yes, all activities are supervised. During meal times, students may explore the college campus in approved areas.
What if my child gets ill?
Both host universities have health centers that are open and available for YEBW student use. Additionally, students may come to the YEBW Office at any time if they need to call home, ask questions, or make arrangements to see a nurse or medical professional.
What are the living arrangements?
Students reside in campus dormitories with a same-sex, similarly-aged roommate. Genders are separated by floors and dorm supervisors reside on each wing. University staff and resident directors/assistants may reside in the dorms for additional safety and supervision.
My son/daughter is currently in eighth grade. Can he/she still attend this summer?
Typically, students must complete their freshman year in high school before attending; however, we assess early entry on a case-by-case basis. Please contact YEBW for further details or to discuss your student.
Who are the individuals that are interacting with the students during the week?
All volunteer participants are members of the business community that have successfully completed training sessions and background checks prior to participation in the program. YEBW Staff is onsite 24 hours a day.
Will my child be homesick?
For many students, YEBW is the first extended time away from home, and some experience homesickness. We address this potential issue at the beginning of the program, present it as a learning experience, and offer methods for students to overcome it.
Can I visit my student during the week at YEBW?
Parents are encouraged to attend YEBW Kickoff and graduation events, but parent visits during the week are highly discouraged.
Can I send a package to my student?
Yes, mailing addresses will be provided prior to the programs.
Can my student come home during the evenings?
No. YEBW is meant to be an immersive experience, which is why all students are required to stay overnight in on-campus dormitories.
Why do you ask students requesting financial assistance to fundraise for their tuition?
YEBW encourages all YEBW participants to take part in some sort of fundraising – beyond raising tuition, fundraising fosters invaluable skills and a sense of self sufficiency that will benefit your student now and in the future. The experience will help teach resourcefulness, initiative, and effective networking and communication skills.
